Staff & Faculty Core Curriculum

Systems Approach to Training Basic Course (SATBC)

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:   The SATBC is a five-day (40-hour) training program designed to familiarize training developers with the Systems Approach to Training (SAT) process and accompanying job aid. The U.S. Army's requirement for mission-focused, task-based training is embodied in the philosophy of the SAT. SAT is a disciplined, logical approach to making collective, individual, and self-development training decisions for the Total Army and consists of a five phase approach to training/education development: analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (also known as ADDIE). The SATBC familiarizes training developers with the five-phased SAT process because using the SAT process serves as the basis for standardized Army training. The SATBC provides a hands-on, “learn by doing” opportunity to learn the skills needed to develop and evaluate training materials to the standards established by TRADOC Regulation 350-70, Training Development Management, Processes, and Products by training students how to use the SAT Desk Reference as a job aid when performing tasks associated with the SAT process. Thus, the SATBC focuses on student performance of selected analysis, design, and development tasks related to individual training development outputs or products required by TRADOC Regulation 350-70. SATBC is designed for delivery over video teletraining or in a traditional classroom.

Specific topics include: 1) Course Requirements, 2) Five phases of SAT, 3) Critical Individual Tasks, 4) Task Performance Specifications, 5) Develop a Partial Lesson Outline, 6) Develop Selected Portions of a TSP, 7) Write Performance Test for a Learning Objective, 8) Make a job aid, and 9) Determine Validity of Training Materials.

2. TARGET POPULATION:   Active and Reserve Component noncommissioned, warrant, and commissioned officers and DoD civilians/contractors assigned for the first time to develop training or training products using the five-phased SAT process. This includes persons assigned to positions coded as training developers as well as TASS instructors who must develop training. Personnel who supervise these individuals are also encouraged to attend.

3. COURSE PREREQUISITES:   None

4. WAIVERS:   Waivers are granted on a very exceptional basis. Responsibility for granting waivers of this training rests with the Division Chief of the U.S. Army Training Support Center Staff and Faculty Development Division. Individuals who have successfully completed an equivalent course conducted by another TRADOC, Army, armed service, or civilian academic program may consider requesting a waiver. All requests for waiver must be in writing and fully documented with complete justification for the action.

5. STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:   Course goals are accomplished with conferences followed by student-centered individual and group practical exercises that require students to use the SAT Desk Reference. These practical exercises give students the opportunity to practice tasks or parts of tasks and receive immediate feedback and reinforcement from instructors and course participants. Successful completion of this course meets the training requirement for award of the training development qualification identifier.

6. MANAGEMENT:   The course manager for the SATBC is the Staff and Faculty Development Division, Education and Training Support Directorate, U.S. Army Training Support Center, Fort Eustis, VA 23604-5166. For SATBC information, waiver request, or scheduling call: SFDD Registrar, DSN 826-4535/3142 or Com (757) 878-4535/3142.   [calendar]
