Asynchronous Distributed Learning Instructor Course (AdLIC)

1. COURSE DESCRIPTION:   AdLIC is a 40-hour course taught asynchronously in Blackboard (online) over a 4-week period and on a part-time basis (approximately 10 hours per week). AdLIC is designed to teach the fundamentals of asynchronous instruction. The course serves as an introduction to asynchronous learning and provides the experienced instructor with skills and competencies necessary to successfully facilitate an asynchronous course. The AdLIC course introduces methodologies, theories, and instructional strategies for teaching in the asynchronous environment. AdLIC is broken into 5 course modules. Each module contains interactive multimedia instruction (IMI) that enables students to view lessons online from any location. In addition to IMI, each module contains at least 1 practical exercise (PE) to provide students with the opportunity to test their newly attained knowledge and skills relevant to asynchronous instruction. ADLIC has an instructor in the loop and students must keep pace with their classmates and multiple, weekly threaded discussions.

Specific topics include: Traditional and dL Environments, Principles of Asynchronous Learning, Interaction in Asynchronous Courses, Effective Teaching Techniques to Support a Blended Learning Environment, Effective Asynchronous Instruction, and Asynchronous Instructor Responsibilities.

2. TARGET POPULATION:   AdLIC is designed to teach experienced instructors how to prepare and facilitate asynchronous instruction in a web-based environment.

3. COURSE PREREQUISITES:   Certified as an instructor (successful completion of the Army Basic Instructor Course (ABIC) or other TRADOC approved instructor training course) and 12 months of platform experience.

4. WAIVERS:   Waivers are granted on a very exceptional basis. Responsibility for granting waivers of this training rests with the Division Chief of the U.S. Army Training Support Center Staff and Faculty Development Division. Individuals who have successfully completed an equivalent course conducted by another TRADOC, Army, armed service, or civilian academic program may consider requesting a waiver. All requests for waiver must be in writing and fully documented with complete justification for the action.

5. STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:   The course consists of 17 practical exercises derived from material presented in the 5 IMI content modules, as well as a cumulative exam assessing overall knowledge of asynchronous instructional techniques and practices. In order to successfully complete the course, the student must achieve a “GO” on 80% of the 17 practical exercises (14 of 17) AND achieve a “GO” on the Cumulative Exam with a minimum score of 70% (140 out of 200 possible points). Students who successfully complete 80% of the PE’s and achieve a 70% on the cumulative exam are awarded a certificate of course completion.

6. MANAGEMENT:   The course manager for AdLIC is the Staff and Faculty Development Division, Education Training Support Directorate, U.S. Army Training Support Center, Fort Eustis, VA 23604-5166. For AdLIC information, waiver request, or scheduling call: SFDD Registrar, DSN 826-4535/3142 or Com (757) 878-4535/3142.   [calendar]
